PrEP & PEP explained
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is medication taken by HIV-negative people to prevent getting HIV. Taken as prescribed, it is highly effective. In Ireland, PrEP is available free through the HSE's national PrEP programme at participating clinics. PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emergency course started as soon as possible and within 72 hours of a possible exposure — the sooner the better. If you think you need PEP, contact a sexual-health clinic or hospital emergency department straight away.

HIV testing & U=U
Knowing your status is the single most empowering thing you can do for your sexual health. Testing is quick, free and confidential at clinics across Ireland, and the HSE offers a free home STI test (including HIV) ordered online and posted to you. U=U means Undetectable = Untransmittable: a person living with HIV who is on effective treatment with an undetectable viral load cannot pass on HIV to sexual partners. U=U is backed by global scientific consensus — it's a reason to test, treat and talk openly, free of stigma.

STIs, mpox & vaccinations
Most STIs are common, treatable and nothing to be ashamed of — regular testing is just good self-care, especially if you have new or multiple partners. Vaccines can protect you against hepatitis A and B, HPV, and mpox. The HSE runs targeted vaccination for gay and bisexual men and other groups at higher risk; ask at a sexual-health or GBMSM clinic. If you notice symptoms, or a partner tells you they've tested positive for something, get checked — many infections have no symptoms at all.

Public STI/GUM clinics are free and confidential. In Ireland you can find your nearest service through the HSE, and gay and bisexual men can access dedicated services such as the Gay Men's Health Service in Dublin. Across the EU, the ECDC and national health services list testing options near you.
